Family Counselling FAQ

1. What kinds of issues can family counselling help with?

Family counselling can support you with:
・Miscommunication and frequent conflict
・Cultural or generational differences
・Adult children and parents navigating independence
・Coming-out process or LGBTQ+ family support
・Blended or mixed-race family dynamics
・Emotional distance and past hurts that feel unresolved

2. We have a lot of cultural differences in our family. Can counselling help?

Yes. Families with Asian, immigrant, or multicultural backgrounds often hold different beliefs and communication styles. Counselling creates a safe space to understand each other’s experiences without judgment and build more respectful, loving connection.

3. Someone in our family recently came out. Can therapy help us navigate this?

Absolutely. Coming out is a brave and emotional process for everyone involved. Counselling supports parents in processing fears or confusion, and helps children feel seen and supported — so families can move toward deeper understanding and acceptance.

4. Do family members need to speak the same language in counselling?

No. I offer counselling in English and Mandarin, and I understand most Cantonese. You are welcome to speak the language you feel most comfortable with — I will ensure everyone feels understood.

5. What if one family member doesn’t want to participate?

This is very common. We can start with whoever feels ready. When one person changes how they interact, the whole family system naturally begins to shift.

6. How does Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) work?

EFFT helps families slow down reactive patterns, understand the deeper needs beneath conflict, and build emotional safety. The goal is not to blame — it’s to repair connection and trust.

7. Will we talk about the past?

Only in ways that help with the present and future. We address past hurts to reduce their impact now and strengthen your relationships going forward.

8. How long does family counselling take?

Duration depends on your goals and the complexity of challenges. Some families see changes in 6–12 sessions, while others seek longer-term support for deeper healing.
