FAQ

Here’s what the journey looks like when you work with me:

  1. Book your free 20-minute consultation — This is a no-obligation call or video meeting where you ask questions, I explain how I work, and we explore whether we’re a good fit.

  2. Choose your session type — In-person at Vancouver (Fairview / West Broadway) or online (from anywhere in BC).

  3. Schedule your first full session — Once you decide to move forward, we set a time that fits your schedule (including evenings/weekends).

  4. Complete intake forms — You’ll be sent a secure link to fill out a brief questionnaire and consent forms ahead of our first session.

  5. Attend the initial session — We’ll connect, review your goals, outline how counselling will proceed, and begin the work.

  6. Weekly/regular sessions — Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum. Over time we may adjust frequency.

  7. Ongoing review & flexibility — We’ll periodically check in on your progress and adjust scheduling, format (online vs in-person) or focus as needed.

Yes — absolutely. I offer both in-person sessions in Vancouver (Fairview / West Broadway) and online counselling (accessible from anywhere), to provide flexible, effective support tailored to your needs.

Why choose in-person?

  • The face-to-face setting offers a neutral, private space — ideal for couples, family or deeper relational work.

  • Non-verbal cues (body language, eye contact) are fully visible, which can enhance connection and therapeutic insight.

  • For complex issues, in-person may provide more immediate support and a controlled environment.

Why choose online?

  • Online sessions remove the burden of travel, parking, and childcare — making regular attendance easier.

  • It improves access for people who live farther away, have mobility or scheduling constraints, or prefer the comfort of their own space.

  • Research shows online counselling can be just as effective as in-person for many issues, such as anxiety or depressive symptoms.

How to decide?

  • Think about what makes you feel most comfortable and safe.

  • Consider your lifestyle and whether travel/time might be a barrier.

  • Ask yourself whether having a neutral office space or your own environment is more helpful for you.

  • We can start online and then transition to in-person (or vice versa) if that suits your journey.

Important Announcement: GST Update & Rate Adjustment

December 20, 2024

I want to share some important updates with you.

Effective today:

• Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) are no longer required to collect GST on counseling services. GST will no longer be applied to your sessions.

Most clients begin with weekly sessions. This allows you and I to develop a strong therapeutic connection, maintain momentum, and give you consistent support as you work through the changes you’re seeking.

Why weekly sessions?

  • Weekly sessions help build trust and rapport between us, which is essential for deeper therapeutic work.

  • Regular sessions ensure that you don’t lose momentum or clash with everyday stressors before we address them.

  • Especially early in counselling—when issues feel more active or urgent—weekly sessions give the space to explore and change patterns more effectively.

How the frequency may change
As you make progress and your goals start taking shape, we’ll discuss together whether it feels right to reduce or adjust the frequency:

  • We may move to every-two-weeks when things are stabilizing and you’re using the tools from sessions more actively on your own.

  • For ongoing support or maintenance after the most intense phase of work, sessions might shift to monthly or “on-an-as-needed” check-ins.

  • In times of major transitions, crisis, or turning points, we might temporarily increase session frequency to twice-weekly or more, to provide added support and momentum.

Your personalised plan
Together we will:

  • Agree on an initial session frequency based on your unique needs, goals and availability

  • Review it periodically (every few weeks) to monitor how you’re progressing and whether the frequency is still serving you

  • Remain flexible — adjusting the pace as needed so your counselling fits your life, not the other way around

Many extended health benefit plans cover counselling provided by Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC).

Check the details of your individual plan to ensure coverage.

Clients are required to pay out of pocket for each session and submit their receipt to their extended health plan for reimbursement.

Yes, ICBC covers counseling if you’ve been in a car accident.  ICBC pays for up to 12 sessions within the first 12 weeks of the accident.  The first session, which is an initial assessment, is billed at ICBC’s rate of $245.  The following 11 sessions are 50 minute per session and covered by ICBC at $140 each.

I don’t charge anything beyond ICBC’s rates, and tax is included, so there is no additional cost.

However, I don’t do direct billing with ICBC, I can provide a receipt for you to submit to ICBC for reimbursement.  ICBC pre-approves 12 sessions of counselling within the first 12 weeks of the accident.  If more sessions are needed, I can help request extra coverage.  If you have any questions about counselling covered by ICBC, please feel free to contact me, I am happy to help.

I provide sliding scale for those with limited incomes and no insurance. I reserve seats for sliding scales to make the service sustainable. Please contact me for more details.

If you or a close family member have been affected by a violent crime in British Columbia, you may be eligible for CVAP-funded counselling—meaning counselling costs may be covered so you can focus on healing, not fees.

What is CVAP?
The Crime Victim Assistance Program provides financial support to victims of violent crimes (and in some cases immediate family members or witnesses). It can help cover counselling services among other benefits.

How our practice supports CVAP clients:

  • We are an approved provider for CVAP, which means we can bill directly so you don’t have to pay upfront.

  • We create a trauma-informed, safe counselling space where you can process the emotional impact of crime, develop coping skills, rebuild trust, and reconnect with life.

  • Both in-person sessions (Vancouver – Fairview / West Broadway) and online options are available.

  • Eligible for individuals, immediate family members or witnesses of violent crimes.

  • We offer a free 20-minute consultation to answer your questions and help you understand how this service works for you.

How to access CVAP counselling with us:

  1. Submit your CVAP application (if you haven’t already). You do not have to wait for charges or conviction to apply.

  2. Once approved, you’ll receive a claim number and number of sessions you’re eligible for.

  3. Contact us and let us know you’re a CVAP-approved client. We match you to an approved counsellor.

  4. Begin counselling without the financial stress.

Important things to know:

  • Not all types of therapy or providers may be covered—CVAP sets guidelines for which counsellors/facilities qualify.

  • There may be limits on the number of sessions or co-pays if the provider’s fee exceeds CVAP’s rate.

  • Being approved doesn’t depend on a conviction — you can apply after the crime and still receive support

If you’re a First Nations person in British Columbia with a status number, you may be eligible to receive counselling services through the FNHA’s Mental Wellness & Counselling (MWC) program—meaning the cost may be covered so you can focus on healing.
Key points:

  • Your counsellor must be registered with the FNHA and meet their eligibility criteria (e.g., relevant professional credentials, experience working with First Nations peoples). First Nations Health Authority+2First Nations Health Authority+2

  • Clients with status in BC may receive up to 22 hours of counselling under the benefit; additional hours may be possible by exception.

  • Before booking: check with your provider that they are FNHA-registered and can direct-bill through FNHA. You will need to provide your status number and PHN.

  • Services are designed to be culturally safe and trauma-informed, recognising the unique histories and healing journeys of First Nations peoples.

How I support FNHA-funded clients

  • I am an FNHA-approved provider (or willing to register/apply with you) so you can access counselling without upfront fees.

  • Your counselling experience will be respectful of your culture and identity, sensitive to intergenerational trauma and designed to support your wellness in a safe way.

  • I offer both in-person (Vancouver / Fairview West Broadway) and online sessions, and flexible scheduling (evenings & weekends) to make access easier.

  • I help guide you through the process of verifying eligibility and arranging pre-determination if needed.

If you think you might qualify and want to learn more—please reach out. We’ll review your status, check your eligibility quickly and book your first session.
